January 16 (Renewables Now) – Canada-based Teck Resources Limited (TSX:TECK.A) on Wednesday announced it has paid about CAD 2 million (USD 1.5m/EUR 1.4m) for a 1.05-MW solar power system on its former mine site in British Columbia.
The company has bought the SunMine solar installation at the Sullivan Mine site from the city of Kimberley. The facility, in operation since 2015, is the first grid-connected solar array in British Columbia and the first installed on a reclaimed mine site. The solar farm could be expanded in the future, Teck Resources said.
The acquisition will help the company gain firsthand experience with solar power as the company advances solar power development at other operations, CEO Don Lindsay said.
Teck provided the land and site infrastructure for the facility as part of its strategy of developing post-mining land uses. The company’s involvement in the solar farm is part of efforts to take action on climate change.
